Meet me in the garden

Robin Hall

Robin Hall, executive producer of the Macy's Flower Show, welcomes you to "Flora Exotica"

I'd like to take to this opportunity to invite you to join us for "Flora Exotica," Macy's 33rd Annual Flower Show, Sunday, April 1st through Sunday, April 15th.

Every year, Macy's Flower Show and its vast landscape of flowers, exotic plants, trees and topiaries will again provide a welcome respite from the hardscape of the city and the sharp bite of winter.

Watch as our majestic main floor is totally transformed into a breathtaking oasis of brilliant flowers and vivid fantasy, all 100,000 square feet of it separated into 11 different gardens brimming with color and filled with imagination.

As you enter the Broadway entrance past our wildly creative Flower Show Windows, you'll pass through an arch formed by two 18' high topiary giraffes that provide a remarkable gateway into our centerpiece garden featuring a lush and diverse landscape of tree, flowers, and plants from the continent of Africa.

Again this year, Macy's Team in collaboration with Ireland Gannon Associates of Long Island, NY, has worked to create this epic floral spectacular, a year in the planning that has brought the nascent Spring season into full flower.

Even though over 400,000 visitors will see this show, it still remains one of New York City's best-kept secrets. It is as remarkable in its own way as our other large scale events, as it is created by the same team that produces Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and America's biggest fireworks display, Macy's 4th of July celebration.

I sincerely hope you'll join us to take it all in; the Main Floor, our 2 special kids gardens on the 7th Floor, tours, seminars and events, as well as Bouquet of the Day on the main aisle and our exclusive series of spectacular floral creations by New York's most celebrated designers that this year will include Marc Blackwell, Rebecca Cole, Preston Bailey, Oliver Guigni, Jeff Pennington and Jorge Cazzorla.

And today, you can be part of our opening celebration called "Petacular Fair" which will feature a fashion runway show of New York's top cats, hot dogs, and crazy critters.

There are performances from Disney's Broadway Hit "Tarzan," floats and balloons from the Macy's Parade including "Charlotte's Web" and Greendog, along with a Ferris wheel, a petting zoo, and a trip back in time courtesy of Colonial Williamsburg.

In the following pages, the Daily News gives you a look behind the scenes as the show came together and a sneak preview of event itself. I hope this special section will inspire you to come and see Macy's Flower Show.

I'll meet you at the garden!
