The federation's Design Division One, titled "Thrill Seekers," gave National Garden Club Inc. members from across New England and beyond an opportunity to exhibit traditional and creative floral designs, and Design Division Two, "Yes — I Can!" was open to any amateur floral designer. Over the course of the 10 days of the show and three rotations of designs, 55 amateur designers from the area competed along with approximately 200 other amateurs and came away with prestigious Top Exhibitor Awards.
Three Southeastern District members received the most coveted awards presented at the show. Sylvia Strand of the Wareham Garden Club received the Jeanne-Marie Parkes Creativity Award for her abstract creative design in the Thrill Seekers' class titled "Let Your Spirits Soar — Ski Jumping."
Also in Division One, Ann Marie Carlson of the Garden Club of Hyannis received the Garden Club of America Zone I Bowl in recognition of her Dutch Flemish period design in the class titled "Fantastic Journey — Time Travel."
In "Yes — I Can!", Helen Goddard of the Garden Club of Buzzards Bay received the National Garden Club Inc. Medal for Design for her lush modern mass floral design in the class titled "I'm a Musician."
Gloria Freitas Steidinger of the Easton Garden Club received the Artisan Award for her bracelet and ring created entirely of plant material in the class titled "I am a Jewelry Designer."
Beverly Barlow of the Nantucket Garden Club and the Garden Club of the Back Bay received the Susan Scheel Thomas Novice Award for her miniature design in the class titled "I'm a Magician."
Robin Murphy of the Wareham Garden Club received the Massachusetts Horticultural Society's Gold Medal for the entire Design Division One exhibit "Thrill Seekers."
The winners will receive their awards at the upcoming awards ceremony at Elm Bank in Wellesley.
In Design Division One, blue ribbons were also received by Donna C. Morrissey and Kathryn Davies Bruce of the Wareham Garden Club. Barbara Lingard of the Aptuxcet Garden Club of Bourne received the blue and the Designer's Choice Award.
All three of the Club Competition Awards presented in Design Division One were received by Southeast District clubs. On the first entry day it went to The Evening Garden Club of Plymouth.
On the second entry day it was earned by the Aptuxcet Garden Club of Bourne, and on the third entry day the Plymouth Garden Club received the award.
In Design Division Two, blue ribbons were received by Becky Williams of Rochester, Gloria Freitas Steidinger of the Easton Garden Club, Ellen Dingwell of the South Dartmouth Garden Club, Joanne Nikitas of the Plymouth Garden Club and Ms. Murphy of the Wareham Garden Club.
Barbara Lingard of the Aptuxcet Garden Club of Bourne received the blue ribbon and the Best of Day Award on the third entry day.
